AN FARA
An Fara (“It Has Begun”) is a multidisciplinary public performance that explores a phrase embodying a moment of chaos and instinctive social rituals, often used during ethnic and religious conflicts in Kaduna State. As a signal for fight or flight, the phrase represents one of the most dangerous times in the history of Northern Nigeria.
The project investigates the layers of this phrase to explore the complexities of the global climate crisis and its ecological, geographical, and political implications. By juxtaposing the climate crisis with Kaduna’s history of ethno-religious conflicts, the work aims to awaken a sense of danger and urgency about our ecosystem. It highlights the interconnectedness of social and ecological systems to tell a story of two systems in collapse, urging communities to unite against environmental threats.
The performance is a co-creation between The Walk Production and The Mud Art Company, under the direction of theatre director Amir Nizar Zuabi and choreographer Ochai Ogaba. It features dance and “The Herds,” a large-scale puppetry project that includes life-size puppet animals traveling 20,000 km from Africa to Europe, fleeing climate destruction. By showcasing the moment of impact between nature and civilization, and between animals and humans, “An Fara” dramatizes the climate crisis and expressses the need to unite and act fast.
